Publication Based Thesis: An Option?

Writing a PhD thesis based on publications has increasingly has become an option in Canada as well as abroad. However, this option is often poorly described and the criteria differ widely. In order to make a choice it is important to have a good sense of what it involves and what the advantages and disadvantages are. This issue is equally important for (potential) supervisors and committee members to ensure an effective process.

The objectives are:

  • To get a better sense of what is involved in writing a publication based thesis;
  • To be aware of the challenges; a
  • To facilitate making a choice for students and their supervisory committees.
Manuscript Examples :
  • Geerte van de Pol: The influence of psychological factors on pregnancy related pelvic symptoms (2006)
  • Johanna Hök: Use of complementary and alternative medicine in the context of cancer (2009)
